Luck Is Relative

A great warrior had a beautiful stallion and the people said he was lucky. Maybe, said the warrior.

One day the stallion disappeared and the people said the warrior was unlucky. Maybe, said the warrior.

The next day the stallion returned, with many mares. The people said the warrior was very lucky. Maybe, said the warrior.

The warrior had a son, who rode on the stallion, fell off the horse and broke his leg. The people said the warrior was unlucky. Maybe, said the warrior.

Then the warrior’s tribe went to war with another tribe. Many young men died, but because the son of the warrior had a broken leg, he could not go to war and so was spared.
